化蝶(86年~89年)

  經過從無到有的中正，在汗水、淡水、歡笑與掌聲中，度過第一個十年。86年10月21日鄭國顺博士接任第二任校長，提出建構中正藍圖：著重軟體充實、加強校園人文與自然環境的美化、持續進行硬體建設、以大學本部為核心的廷伸教育體系，期許這份藍圖成為中正的另一起跑點。
  脫離創校初期的艱澀與摸索，中正進入了精緻發展的新階段，至88學年度為止，已有21個學系、32個研究所、19個博士班、教師人數400餘人、 學生人數6700餘人，已逼近中型大學的規模。
  During the tenure of the second president Dr. Koo-Shung Cheng, who served a term of three years from 1996 to 1999, the University continued its buildup in infrastructure and further established various systems, and endeavored to nourish an environment of humanism as well. With the addition of College of Law, College of Education, and several academic programs, the University had grown into a mid-sized institution of higher education, and established an undergraduate-based extension education system.

86年

• 舉辦第28屆全國大專院校運動會。
• 鄭國順博士就任本校第二任校長交接典禮。

87年

• 增設法學院。
• 數學系林長壽教授榮獲中央研究院院士、教育部學術獎。
• 心理系劉英茂教授榮獲教育部國家講座。
• 設置通識教育中心、研究發展處。

88年

• 增設教育學院。
• 頒授諾貝爾化學獎得主哈佛大學柯瑞〈E.J.Corey〉教授為名譽理學博士。
• 頒授雲門舞集創辦人林懷民先生名譽博士學位
• 數學系林長壽教授榮獲教育部國家講座。
• 林前校長清江博士逝世。

89年

• 教育所楊深坑教授榮獲教育部國家講座。
• 與雲嘉地區八所大專院校簽訂合作交流。
• 頒授諾貝爾物理獎得主楊振寧教授為本校名譽理學博士。
• 與雲門舞集2簽訂駐校計畫。
• 林前校長紀念園「清園」暨「清江終身學習中心」揭碑典禮。
